Romsey Abbey

Opening concert of the Romsey Arts Festival 2008

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

 A Sea Symphony

Toward the Unknown Region

MENDELSSOHN

Hebrides Overture

Verleih uns Frieden

2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Romsey Choral Society is pleased to present a concert to celebrate the achievements of this much-loved English composer. Toward the Unknown Region and the acclaimed Sea Symphony mark the work of one of America’s most renowned poets, Walt Whitman. Continuing the sea theme, the ever popular Hebrides Overture (better known as Fingal's Cave) is a natural addition to the programme.

It is believed that this performance of the ten-minute Toward the Unknown Region (dating from 1907) and the epic hour-long Sea Symphony, first performed at the Leeds Festival in 1910, will be a “first” for Romsey Abbey.  It is particularly gratifying, therefore, that this unusual programme should form part of the Romsey Arts Festival.
